She who understands her topmost priority can make steps towards that summit and enjoy her progress every day; he who confuses his most urgent priority will observe the mountains grow in height and number and one day wonder: “what happened?”.Jan
When you know your priorities in any given moment, you don't have to invest effort on deciding what to do. Instead, you can spend your time actually doing something that moves you closer towards what you need.
Being aware of and conscious about your number one priority in every moment means:
- you leave no room for doubt
- you can move forward confidently
- you will find it easy to make your decisions quickly and in favor of moving towards your well-being and other goals
- you can ignore distractions (and the excuses to let yourself be distracted because it's too tough to make up your mind)
- you have improved focus and motivation because you are more aware of what you are doing, and why
- you make progress because you are actually trying (taking action)
- you eliminate the urge to justify (including to yourself)
- you know what to do, what decisions to make when something unexpected tries to interfere. You are less likely to be caught unprepared or become overwhelmed and paralyzed.
Be very clear about your first priority and your inspiration for it, and be sure about what your second priority is. It's great if, with time, you also develop a clearer understanding about what your lesser priorities are; this helps you fine-tune your decisions while staying dead-focused on your number one priority, so that you don't miss opportunities that further your primary task as well as any lesser goals. But the important thing is to be absolutely sure and determined with conviction about your first, second and possibly third priority.
Every moment, ask yourself: is what I am doing right now furthering my progress towards my #1 priority, the most important thing in my life? If it is not, do something else. Don't hesitate or justify, you already made up your mind about what is your number one priority and if what you're currently doing is not helping you make progress towards that, just cut it out. Shut up your thoughts, stop what you're doing, get up right now and start doing something else – anything else. Whatever it takes.
No more excuses.
This very moment.
Do something else.
Go.
